Welcome
Established in 1976, the Austin Shambhala Meditation Center offers meditation instruction and classes in the tradition of Shambhala Buddhism, a form of Western Buddhism. This lineage teaches the Shambhala view of living an uplifted life, fully engaged with the world.
We are part of Shambhala International, a worldwide community of meditation and retreat centers
founded in 1973 by Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, a Tibetan Buddhist meditation master, artist, author, and poet. Today, the Shambhala tradition is led by Trungpa Rinpoche's son, Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche.
Our local center, centrally located just south of downtown Austin, offers free meditation instruction, public meditation hours, and a core curriculum of Shambhala Buddhist teachings, as well as training in contemplative arts. We invite you to explore our diverse programs, designed to help people of all traditions discover their inherent sanity, gentleness and humor.

Getting Started:
Learn to Meditate
Free meditation instruction is available Sundays at 10 AM and Wednesdays at
6:30 PM. No appointment is necessary. Come into the center, and someone will greet you. You will then be given private or small-group instruction that usually lasts 20-30 minutes. You may ask any questions you have about the center at this time.
Please arrive a little early. No pre-arrangements are necessary, and there is no need to bring anything. Comfortable clothing is recommended.
After you've received meditation instruction, you're invited to join us during our public meditation hours:
